Gabriella Sutherland, a senior interior design and psychology student, presented her project, “Authoritarian Aesthetics in American Politics: Trump, Classicism, and the White House,” on Friday, March 20, with a focus on how architectural design shapes human emotion and perception.
Interior design students recently completed a 960 s.f. container home project—along with physical models of their designs! Then, they toured a local development where shipping containers had been transformed into Airbnb rentals. Experiencing the built environment after completing their own designs gave them a valuable perspective on how their conceptual work can translate into real-life spaces.
Interior design students researched nationally award-winning design projects and identified the key principles and elements that made them successful. Then each group created an abstract 6” x 6” cube that represents those elements through their own design interpretation. This project connects research, creativity, and hands-on learning in the studio.
Assistant Professor Cyndi Parker's students were recently able to see first-hand the construction of a new house in its rough-in phase. This is especially valuable because our freshmen Interior Design students have been learning how to read and draw floor plans throughout the semester and a construction site visit like this allows them to see the real-world application of what they are putting on paper!
Students are being introduced to the process of felting using wool fibers, water, and friction in Assistant Professor Fulton's Textiles for Interiors course.
I chose pro at MSU because I’ve wanted to work as an interior designer ever since I was young! I had taken a few architecture courses in high school, which made me put more thought into my decision. However, as soon as I toured the interior design program here, I knew this was what I was supposed to do, and have loved it ever since!
After I toured MSU I knew it was home. There is so much SEC passion, and the people here are so kind.
My favorite spot on campus is wherever the tailgating is on game days!
Don't be nervous to get involved. Making connections is so important.
Books; I LOVE to read! I also love being outside and getting sun.
I was originally going to major in computer science, but I decided to change my major to interior design the day I was making my schedule, and it's been a dream since.

College is not near as hard as high school!!
